CHAPTER 6

Remy

Streams of sunlight woke me from my sleep, and I turned to find Daddy already out of bed. I looked down at the crumpled sheets and glided my fingers through the warm satin threads that still smelled like him. Musk and wood. He held onto my bump all night, his strong arms holding me like a prisoner against his armored chest as his fingers massaged my scalp.

Sleeping hasn’t been comfortable since I lost the ability to bend down, but being in his arms made me melt. His stubbled chin on top of my head aided in all my worries evaporating into thin air. I felt safe, safer than I have ever felt before. My phone buzzed on the nightstand, snatching me from my thoughts. It was Samantha, asking me if I was still alive and if I had eaten. She knew how cranky I would get if I went too long without food or snacks.

When Jaime saw the text on my phone yesterday, I thought he would have called it quits right then. Cody wasn’t the father of my babies. We had a paternity test taken at the hospital. The whole ordeal was excruciating. I had to watch Cody pretend as if he cared, but I knew he didn’t.

He jetted out of the hospital so fast once the testing was done. I told him he didn’t have to worry about the results, and the sigh of relief he displayed once I uttered those words let me know that I had made the right decision to let him go. I didn’t want Cody in my life anymore, and I sure as hell didn’t want him in my baby’s life.

I tried to tell Jaimie that the babies weren’t Cody’s, but his cheeks were fire engine red, and I didn’t want him to blow a gasket. Seeing him so upset made me sick to my stomach. He was doing everything he could to make me feel safe and cared for.

My nose wrinkled at the smell of cinnamon pancakes, and hazelnut coffee seeped through the entire penthouse. I loved cinnamon anything, and I was thankful pregnancy didn’t ruin it for me.

“Baby girl?” He called from the kitchen.

His voice was tender. I rolled over, squishing the paternity pillow that laid next to me, and lifted. I slid my feet into the cloud plush slippers that waited for me below the bed and headed toward the door. As my slippers glided across the wood floor, maple-flavored bacon and crisp buttered toast invaded my nostrils.

My walk slowed to a saunter at the sound of a raspy voice echoing through the kitchen door. It sounded older and bossy. It sounded like his mother. He never talked about his family, and I knew the agency insisted that suitors kept personal details private from us, but Jaimie was a stranger to me.

It was an odd feeling, the idea of starting a family with someone I knew nothing about. I didn’t know his phone number or his last name. I pressed the shell of my ear against the door as I listened to the withering voice.
